This patch is only required if you are currently running firmware 6.1.9 on your 18R2. It addresses an issue where the 18R2 could display a lower battery power (P) reading than expected, even when using fresh or fully charged batteries.
IMPORTANT: After applying this patch, your firmware will continue to display as version 6.1.9. The version number will not change, but the fix will be applied.
What was fixed:
• Battery power (P) readings now display correctly based on your power configuration
What's changing:
The 18R2 firmware is now split into two versions based on your power setup. You must download and apply the correct version for your unit:
• 18R2 Standard (AA Batteries): For customers using standard AA batteries or the legacy 18R2 LiPo upgrade kit released in 2022 through 2024.
• 18R2 Rev.B LiPo: For customers using the 18R2 Rev.B LiPo Recharge Kit (released 2025). Do not use this version if you have the older LiPo upgrade kit. Use the Standard AA version instead.
How to tell which version you have loaded: When your 18R2 powers on, it will display "LP#" if running the LiPo version, or "P#" if running the standard AA version.
How to update (18R2 Standard AA):
- Download the 18R2 Standard (AA) firmware file: COBRA-18R2-AA-lipo-RevA.S19
- Rename the downloaded file to cobra.s19
- Copy cobra.s19 to the root directory of a USB drive (not inside any folders)
- With the 18R2 powered off, insert the USB drive
- Press and hold the SYNC button, then power on the 18R2. The LEDs will circle to indicate the update is in progress.
- Once complete, the unit will restart. The version will still show 6.1.9. This is expected. The fix has been applied.
- Remove the USB drive.
How to update (18R2 Rev.B LiPo):
- Download the 18R2 Rev.B LiPo firmware file: COBRA-18R2-Lipo-RevB.S19
- Rename the downloaded file to cobra.s19
- Copy cobra.s19 to the root directory of a USB drive (not inside any folders)
- With the 18R2 powered off, insert the USB drive
- Press and hold the SYNC button, then power on the 18R2. The LEDs will circle to indicate the update is in progress.
- Once complete, the unit will restart. The version will still show 6.1.9. This is expected. The fix has been applied.
- Remove the USB drive. On startup, the unit should now display "LP#" confirming the LiPo version is loaded.
Alternative update method:
You can use the COBRA Reprogramming Software (CRS) with your COBRA Wireless Programmer to apply this update. CRS will ask whether your 18R2 uses LiPo or AA and will select the correct file automatically. For more information, see How to Upgrade COBRA Firmware.
