Overview
This guide will walk you through the steps to install a new keyswitch in your COBRA 18M firing module. This process involves disassembling the module, connecting the new keyswitch, and ensuring the wires are properly oriented for functionality.
Tools Required
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Pliers
- 5/16" wrench
- Keyswitch replacement kit
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
-
Remove 6 screws from the front of your 18M (Onboard Cues only)
Turn off your 18M firing module and remove any connected batteries. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the six screws located on the front of the 18M firing module. Three on either side of the onboard cue strips.
-
Remove the Back Cover of the Module
Remove the four screws located at the back of the 18M firing module. Carefully detach the back cover, and disconnect the 9V battery harness as well as the external power support if equipped to expose the internal components.
-
Disconnect the Existing Keyswitch
Locate the keyswitch connection on the module's motherboard. Gently disconnect the Molex plug that connects the keyswitch to the motherboard by pulling it away from the board. Unscrew the nut holding the keyswitch in place using a 5/16" wrench.
-
Install the New Keyswitch
Insert the new keyswitch through the keyhole on the module’s front panel. While holding the keyswitch steady, place the lock nut over the wires and tighten it with a pair of pliers until securely fastened.
-
Reconnect the Wires
Follow the wire configuration below to ensure proper connections:
- Red wire (3) goes between the white and purple wires.
- Ensure the following wire order for reconnection:
- Pin 3 = Red
- Pin 1 = Black
- Pin 2 = White
- Pin 4 = Purple
- Pin 5 = Black
- Pin 6 = Red
- Make sure the wires are inserted with the flat side aligned with the open part of the plug. Avoid inserting the angled side into the open part.
-
Reassemble the Module
After reconnecting the wires, place the back cover onto the module. Ensure no wires are pinched and everything is properly aligned. Secure the back cover using the four screws.
-
Test the New Keyswitch
Once reassembled, power on your 18M firing module to test if the new keyswitch works as intended. Ensure the module is responding correctly when switching between modes (Test/Arm).
Additional Notes
Ensure the module is powered off before beginning any disassembly. Handle all components carefully to avoid damaging the wiring or the motherboard.
