The COBRA firing systems ecosystem consists of many devices including the 18R2, 18M, 36M, 72M, 6M, and Audio Box. Firmware is the embedded software in our hardware that gives life to the device. COBRA is continually striving to improve products, and as we add feature enhancements to each device, COBRA releases new firmware versions to support the newly added functionality. While some new features may not always be available for older hardware, all COBRA systems support the latest firmware versions within our universal system design where all systems work happily together as a single family of products.
To learn more about COBRA Firmware, see our Firmware User Guide.
In addition to performing firmware updates to hardware firmware, COBRA also performs software upgrades to the COBRA Control Panel Android app available online from Google Play. Please see the download for Gen 1 Control panel and Gen 2. Gen 2 is only available on firmware 6.1.x or newer.
How can I tell what firmware version my system is running?
When you power on any COBRA device, the first information displayed in the startup sequence is the software version. For example, 3.0.3, 4.0.0, 5.0.2. The higher the number, the more recent the firmware. The only exception to this is the COBRA Audio Box without the LiPo and LCD upgrade kit.

How can I upgrade my systems to the latest firmware?
We offer two options for upgrading your COBRA device to a new firmware version.
- Option 1: Ship your devices to COBRA headquarters. COBRA does charge a small service fee of $5 per device + shipping for upgrades. The $5 fee includes a firmware upgrade and a COBRA 360 health check on your device.
- Option 2: To perform an upgrade or downgrade of your firmware yourself, you need to purchase the COBRA Wireless Reprogrammer and download the COBRA Reprogramming Software. The reprogrammer and reprogramming software will allow you to update your devices from your home or office PC. The wireless reprogrammer will work for all firmware versions going forward and can be used to both upgrade and downgrade the firmware on any device.
For more information on upgrading your systems, see How to Upgrade COBRA Firmware.
What is the difference between hardware versions A and B?
As the COBRA systems evolve, we may introduce a new hardware version for a specific device. Please see Hardware Hammered Out for more information on hardware versions A and B.
Do you have a list of firmware improvements?
