We want to make you aware of a possible installation issue that may affect certain 18M modules that have been upgraded to 18S slats by the end user or opened for self-repair and have the 18S slat upgrade installed.
When installing the 18S upgrade kit or reassembling an 18M with this kit installed, it is possible for the 9V battery harness to be positioned incorrectly. If the harness is pinched between the backplane and the module enclosure, the wire insulation may become damaged. In rare cases, this could create a short and unintentionally fire a cue if 9V batteries are installed.
Who Is Affected?
- Not affected: Modules originally built or upgraded by COBRA at our warehouse.
- Potentially affected: Modules upgraded with the 18S kit by the customer, or that have been opened/reassembled outside of COBRA.
How COBRA Has Addressed This
To prevent this situation, all new 18S upgrade kits and new 18M modules with the 18S slat kit installed will ship with a protective foam applied to the backplane. This foam covers the exposed solder points and helps prevent the harness from being pinched, even if installed incorrectly.
What You Should Do

Inspect your module - Verify the 9V battery harness is not pressed between the backplane and the enclosure.
- Check the wire insulation - Ensure there are no cuts, nicks, or damage to the harness.
- If you see damage - Remove any 9V batteries immediately and contact COBRA Support before operating the module.
